Athens, Greece, 1 June, 2006 C Top-seeded Misty May and Kerri Walsh advanced to the third round at the Infote Athens Open of the 2006 Swatch-FIVB World Tour, here Thursday, scoring close but decisive victories over Norway and China, in the same venue were they had won the Olympic Gold medal two years earlier. But the Americans had a tough evening in Round II, against China’s Zhang Xi and Xue Chen, winners of the Shanghai Open, last week, going all the way before coming away with a tie-break victory.

Also through to Round III, are second-seeded Juliana Felisberta Silva and Larissa França of Brazil, who had upset May and Walsh in the final of the opening tournament of the season, at Modena.


Natalie Cook and Nicole Sanderson of Australia, fourth at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens also remain undefeated, as does Elaine Youngs, who was teamed with Holly McPeak in winning the bronze medal in Athens 2004, and is now playing here with Rachel Wacholder.


The hosts too had cause to celebrate, albeit in an unexpected team. Home favourites, the reigning European Champions and top-ranked European team in the world, Vasso Karadassiou and Vicky Arvaniti, lost in Round III to Brazil’s Carolina and Maria Clara Salgado sisters. But the second Greek team, of Thalia Koutroumanidou and Maria Tsiartsiani scored two victories in their opening matches and will keep the crowds coming.


Completing the Round III roster are 22nd-seeded Austria’s Doris and Stefanie Schweiger sisters, who scored successive upsets over the Netherlands’ Rebekka Kadijk / Merel Mooren (seeded 11th) and over the USA’s Nancy Mason / Jennifer Boss (seeded 6th).


Play at the Olympic Beach Volleyball Centre of Athens resumes Friday, with morning and evening sessions, beginning at 10:00 local time (07:00 GMT). The finals of the $200,000 event are scheduled for Sunday evening, with the winning team earning $32,000 in prize money.

Athens, Greece, 2 June, 2006 C Top-seeded Kerri Walsh and Misty May are on track to a repeat of their 2004 triumph. In the same stadium where they won their Athens Olympics gold medal, the reigning world champions remain undefeated after two days of play in the Infote Athens Open of the 2006 Swatch-FIVB World Tour. The Americans overcame any obstacle that came their way and scored successive victories here on Friday, over Greece’s Thalia Koutroumanidou / Maria Tsiartsiani and Brazil’s Adriana Behar / Shelda, both in straight sets, to enter the semi-finals.

But second-seeded Juliana Felisberta Silva and Larissa França of Brazil are also undefeated and through to Saturday’s semis, set to repeat their upset victory over the Americans in the final of the season’s opener, in Modena. Juliana / Larissa overcame their fellow-Brazilians, Carolina and Maria Clara Salgado sisters, and the USA’s Rachel Wacholder / Elaine Youngs.


Still alive in the competition, but playing in the losers’ bracket for the two remaining berths in the semi-finals, two teams each from China and Brazil and one each from the USA and the Netherlands. The hosts have been left without representation in the final two days of the competition, following successive defeats, Friday, of Koutroumanidou and Tsiartsiani.


Amongst the hopefuls for a semi-final berth are Brazil’s Renata Ribeiro and Talita Antunes, last year’s Infote Athens Open winners. Despite playing in the losers’ bracket since their defeat in Round I to China’s Ji Linjun / Wang Lu, Renata and Talita thrashed anything that came their way, Friday, posting straight-set victories over Greece’s Vasso Karadassiou / Vicky Arvaniti, China’s Zhang Ying / Zuo Man, and Australia’s Natalie Cook / Nicole Sanderson. On the way, the Brazilians won sets with 21-4 and with 21-7.


Last weekend’s winners of the Shanghai Open, Zhang Xi and Xue Chen of China managed no better than 13th this week, after they were eliminated by their fellow-Chinese, Ji Linjun / Wang Lu, who came in through the Qualification Tournament and remain alive and in contention.


The Infote Athens Open continues Saturday, with afternoon and evening matches at the Olympic Beach Volleyball Centre of the Greek capital. Losers bracket matches begin at 16:00 local time (13:00 GMT), with the semi-finals scheduled to be played under floodlights on Centre Court from 21:00 local time (18:00 GMT).

Athens, Greece, 3 June 2006 C Top-seeded Kerri Walsh and Misty May had to fight back from one set down in the all-USA semi-final, but eventually edged Rachel Wacholder and Elaine Youngs 2-1 (24-26, 21-15, 15-07) in 52 minutes, to qualify to Sunday’s final in the Infote Athens Open of the 2006 Swatch-FIVB World Tour. It will be the second final appearance for Walsh and May in the very same Stadium where they won the 2004 Olympic Games gold medal, defeating Brazil’s Adriana Behar and Shelda.Bede.

This time around, however, up against the USA in the final will be China’s Ji Linjun and Wang Lu, who also scored a comeback upsets victory 2-1 (21-16, 14-21, 10-15) in 46 minutes over Brazil’s second-seeded Larissa França and Juliana Felisberta Silva in the other semi-final, here, Saturday evening. The 25th-seeded Chinese, who had finished a mere 17th last week at the Shanghai Open, came through the losers’ bracket, following a Round II, straight-set defeat in the hands of Greece’s Vasso Karadassiou and Vicky Arvaniti.

França / Felisberta Silva, who had upset Walsh / May in the final of the season’s opening Swatch-FIVB World Tour at Modena, will have to contend with a bronze-medal match appearance, where they take on Wacholder and Youngs.


The defending Champions of the Infote Athens Open, Brazil’s eighth-seeded Renata Ribeiro and Talita Antunes, who had defeated França / Felisberta Silva here in 2005, came within a breath of a semi-final appearance, but were too tired in their second match of the afternoon to upset third-seeded Wacholder and Youngs. Ribeiro / Antunes had already edged China’s Wang Jie and Tian Jia 2-1 (22-20, 15-21, 23-21) in over an hour, when they fell to the Americans 2-0 (21-13, 21-18).


The only European team left in contention after day 2 of the competition, the Netherlands’ Rebekka Kadijk and Merel Mooren left the event early on Saturday, when they lost to China’s Ji Linjun and Lu Wang 2-0 (21-14, 21-15), to rank 7th.


The bronze- and gold-medal matches of the Infote Athens Open will be played under floodlights, Sunday evening, at the Olympic Beach Volleyball Centre, on the Coastal Zone of Phaleron, beginning at 21:00 local time (18:00 GMT).
