Lausanne, Switzerland, November 7, 2006 - China ended its best-ever season of FIVB competition by securing the top two spots on the final 2006 SWATCH-FIVB World Tour podium at this past week’s women’s US$200,000 Phuket Thailand Open after the men ended their 14-event international Beach Volleyball schedule the previous weekend on Acapulco Bay in Mexico.

The youngest team ever to top a SWATCH podium, Xue Chen (17 years old) and Zhang Xi (21) snapped a seven-match losing streak to Chinese rivals Tian Jia and Wang Jie to capture the 15th and final stop on the women’s calendar that started in mid-May at Modena, Italy.

The Phuket Thailand Open title was the second of the season as Xue Chen and Zhang Xi also upset Tian Jia and Wang Jie in the Shanghai gold medal match. With the two medals on southeast Asia sand, the Chinese women amassed 13 podiums in 2006 for the most-ever in a season for the country that will host the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.
“It has been a remarkable season for all the Chinese teams,” said Zhang Xi. “It has also been a long year since we started training last February on the beaches in southern California and will end the season by competing at next month’s Asian Games in Qatar. We look forward to some rest, but we are also eager to start the Olympic qualifying process.”

China will start the Olympic qualifying process with three women’s teams, including Ji Linjun and Wang Lu (19th, 1,918 points, one silver medal), ranked in the top 20 with one men’s team (Penggen Wu/Linyin Xu, 6th, 3,000, one bronze medal) listed among the top six. The bronze medal finish by Wu and Xu in August’s Poland stop in Stare Jablonki was the first-ever SWATCH podium by a Chinese men’s team.

Tian Jia and Wang Jie (5,940, two gold medals, eighth podiums) placed second to Brazilians Juliana Felisberta Silva and Larissa Franca (7,060, seven gold medals, 13 podiums) on the women’s SWATCH point’s list. Xue Chen and Zhang Xi were third (5,120, two gold medals, four podiums) while reigning Olympic champions Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh (4,700, three gold medals, seven podiums) were fourth.
Emanuel Rego and Ricardo Santos of Brazil won their fourth-straight SWATCH point’s title by being the most consistent men’s team ever for a single-season with 14-straight “final four” finishes. With five gold finishes, Emanuel and Ricardo edged Brazilian rivals Marcio Araujo and Fabio Magalhaes for the SWATCH title for the second-straight season (6,380-6,060.
Julius Brink and Christoph Dieckmann were the other team with multi-gold medals in 2006 as the Germans claimed titles in Portugal and Brazil to finish third on the SWATCH points list (4,740) to rank ahead of Pedro Cunha and Franco Neto of Brazil on the standings.
With 42 men’s and 45 women’s SWATCH medals awarded in 2006, Brazil dominated the podiums with 50 (17 gold, 18 silver, 15 bronze), including 27 medals for men’s (9, 10, 8) and 23 for women (8, 8, 7). China (4, 5, 5) and the United States (5, 5, 4) tied second in overall medals with 14 followed by Germany (2, 1, 3) with six and one each for Switzerland (1 gold), Netherlands (1 bronze) and Norway (1 bronze).
The bronze medals for the Dutch men and Norwegian women’s were also a first for those countries in each gender. Both first-time medal winning teams upset the SWATCH point’s leaders for a spot on the FIVB podium. Jochem De Gruijter and Gijs Ronnes of the Netherlands defeated Emanuel and Ricardo for the Russian bronze in St. Petersburg while Norway’s Nila Ann Hakedal and Ingrid Torlen upset Juliana and Larissa for the Mexican bronze in Acapulco.
The 2007 SWATCH season is the first of two years of Olympic qualifying for the Beijing 2008 Games as a team’s top eight finishes during the process will count. Other than host China, only two teams from a country can qualifying for the Summer Games with the African continent guaranteed one spot per gender.

2007 SWATCH-FIVB WORLD TOUR CALENDAR - With the dates for men’s and women’s events in Poland being set, the 2007 calendar for the SWATCH-FIVB World Tour will feature 37 events over a seven-month period as the qualifying process for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games begins next May in Shanghai, China. With new events scheduled for six sites, the 2007 SWATCH-FIVB World Tour schedule currently features 18 events for women and 19 stops for men with pending tournaments being negotiated in four other countries. Prize money for the 37 events will be US$8.75-million, including $1-million for the SWATCH-FIVB World Championships to be held July 24-29 in Gstaad, Switzerland. Held every other year, the 2007 SWATCH-FIVB World Championships will be staged in Europe for the fourth-time since 1997 and will feature 48 of the world’s best teams from each gender. With the SWATCH-FIVB World Tour calendar increasing from 29 events in 2006 to 37 in 2007, FIVB President Rubén Acosta said, “Beach Volleyball continues to enjoy exponential growth and the start of Olympic qualification process next year has further boosted the interest in our sport. We are proud to promote the SWATCH FIVB World Tour as the only way for the best athletes in the world to play Beach Volleyball at international level.” For the first-time in the history of the SWATCH-FIVB World Tour, international events will be held in a Middle Eastern country in 2007 as the 20-year old circuit will stage an event next May in Bahrain. With the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games less than 21 months away, the FIVB has seen a “strong interest” from Asian promoters with new stops in Indonesia and Singapore to join existing tournaments in Shanghai and Phuket, Thailand. Other new events are set for Finland and Norway as the 2007 SWATCH-FIVB World Tour also contains established stops across Europe and the Americas, including Grand Slams in Paris, Norway (Stavanger), Berlin and Austria (Klagenfurt). |
