SHANGHAI, CHINA, April 26, 2007 - Chinese Beach Volleyball teams will be seeking to repeat their most successful event ever on the SWATCH-FIVB World Tour as the Asian country hosts the first international stop on the US$8.75-million circuit for 2007.

The fourth annual Jinshan Beach competition has attracted teams from 39 countries for the $400,000 China Shanghai Jinshan Open with the current entry list featuring 64 men’s and 62 women’s teams for the first of six SWATCH-FIVB World Tour stops to be held in Asia this season.

The 2006 China Shanghai Jinshan Open saw the host country capture the top two podium spots in the women’s competition as Xue Chen became the youngest player ever to win an international Beach Volleyball event as the then 17-year old teamed with Zhang Xi to upset Wang Jie and Tian Jia in the finals.

The Chinese women team of Zhang Ying and Zuo Man also captured fourth in the 2006 event as the Asian country advanced three tandems to an international “final four” for the first-time ever. Penggen Wu and Linyin Xu led the Chinese men’s effort by posting a ninth for another “best-ever” placement on the SWATCH-FIVB World Tour.

The China Shanghai Jinshan Open, which marks the 10th-straight year that China has hosted the international tour starting in 1998 when Dalian host the first of three women’s events, also launches the qualifying process for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games that concludes July 20, 2008. The 2007 season is also highlighted by the SWATCH-FIVB World Championships in the Swiss Alps village of Gstaad July 24-29.

The Beijing 2008 Olympic Beach Volleyball competition will feature 24 teams per gender. By July 21, 2008, the FIVB will establish an Olympic Ranking based on the best eight performances of teams in recognized Olympic Qualification tournaments (SWATCH FIVB World Tour events, SWATCH FIVB World Championships, FIVB recognized Continental Championship Finals).

China will automatically qualify as the host country, the top 23 teams from each gender will qualify for Beijing 2008, subject to a maximum of two teams per country. In order to respect the universality principle of the Olympic Games, if a continent does not have any teams qualified after the above procedure is applied, the 23rd place will be occupied by the highest-ranked eligible team from the continent in question.

Including Monday’s (April 30) men’s country quota playoff matches, there will be seven days of competition for the China Shanghai Jinshan Open, the first of 14 double gender events in 2007. Men’s qualifying “officially” starts the China Shanghai Jinshan Open Tuesday with the men’s gold medal match May 5 when the final two teams compete for the $32,000 first-place prize.

If needed, women’s country quota playoffs will be Tuesday followed by qualifying Wednesday and the medal matches May 6. The Beach Volleyball tournament will start the 21st men’s international Beach Volleyball season and the women’s 16th women’s SWATCH-FIVB World Tour campaign.

The China Shanghai Jinshan Open is the 192nd men’s and 150th women’s SWATCH-FIVB World Tour Beach Volleyball event (open, grand slam, Olympic and Goodwill). The first men’s SWATCH-FIVB World Tour event was played February 17-22, 1987 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The first women’s SWATCH-FIVB World Tour event was played August 14-16, 1992 at Almeria, Spain.

The 2007 schedule also features Grand Slam stops in Paris (June 19-24), Norway (Stavanger, June 26-July 1), Berlin (July 10-15) and Austria (Klagenfurt, Aug. 1-5). |
