Iran China India Continue Winning Streak at Asia Junior Men's Championship 2008-08-26 12:05:00 From:AVC
Tehran, Iran, August 26, 2008 – Host Iran, China and India still remained unbeaten at the 14th Asian Junior. Men's Volleyball Championship when they beat Korea, Japan and Qatar respectively in the 1st to 8th classification round on Wednesday in Tehran, Iran.
In Group E which consists of Iran, Qatar, India and Korea, defending champion and host met strong challenge from Korea, and lost the first set at 25-23. Iran then rallied back to take the next three sets and won the match in one hour and 41 minutes, but the three set score margin was very close 25-22, 25-22 and 25-23.
In the group’s other match, India, third finisher at last edition, defeated Qatar without any difficulty and used only 57 minutes to clinch the three sets at 25-14, 25-14, 25-13.
Iran is to meet India and Korea will play against Qatar in their last match of the second round.
In Group F, China, who placed first in the previous group round, edged Japan, silver medal winner at the 13th Asian Junior Men’s Championship in 2006, 3-1 in 90 minutes. The Chinese, fifth at last edition, took the first two sets with ease at 25-21 and 25-20. But the spirited Japanese rallied to get the third set 25-23. In facing the strong comeback, China had to exert their best to win the fourth set 25-23 and also the match.
The Australian Jr. Men’s Team were defeated by Pakistan 1- 3. Both teams started well with neither able to get away from the other. The Aussies were able to extend the lead through some good middle attack to close the set 25-20. Then Pakistan took advantage of errors made by Australia and made it 2-1 at 25-15 and 36-34. The fourth set played out as a copy of the second set. The Aussies errors and the Pakistani attack efficiency made it too hard for the Aussies to get into the set and the Pakistanis went on to win the set 25-16.
The Aussies next match is against China while Japan to play against Pakistan in their last classification match so as to decide their crossover opponent for the quarterfinals.
In the playoff matches for the 9nth to 13th place, Sri Lanka beat Maldives 25-18, 25-14, 25-9, and Chinese Taipei defeated Kazakhstan 3-1 (25-20, 25-16, 24-26, 25-16).
