Wu & Xu Net First Chinese Men’s Gold Medal On SWATCH FIVB World Tour

Moscow, Russia, June 14, 2010 - Reigning Olympic champions Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers were looking to top a SWATCH FIVB World Tour podium for the fourth-time in 2010, but the Americans could not out-last Penggen Wu and Linyin Xu as the Chinese pair captured their country’s first-ever men’s gold medal here Monday in the 24-year history of the international Beach Volleyball circuit.
Playing in their second finale in the Russian capital in the past three seasons, the 13th-seeded Wu and Xu scored a 21-17, 17-21 and 17-15 win in 57 minutes in the finals of the US$600,000 Grand Slam presented by SEAT to give China back-to-back wins over teams from the United States the past two days on the Poklonnaya Gora (Victory Park) centre court.
Monday’s title was Wu and Xu’s first gold medal win in seven tries on the SWATCH FIVB World Tour as the Chinese dropped the 2008 Moscow finale to the top-seeded Dalhausser and Rogers 16-21, 21-19 and 15-11 over Wu and Xu in 60 minutes.  The 2008 match was the last SWATCH FIVB World Tour meeting between the two teams as Dalhausser and Rogers now lead the series 5-1.
“We played very well this week and my partner made a lot of great plays,” said the 24-year old Xu.  “We handled the pressure from the Olympic champions for most of the match and made the plays at the end of the third-set.  And, we had a lot of good luck.  This is a very special weekend as the women also won the gold medal.”
The 2010 Grand Slam presented by SEAT, which was part of the host country’s Russian Day observance, also featured the same two countries in the women’s gold medal match where eighth-seeded Chen Xue and Xi Zhang of China posted a 21-17 and 21-19 victory in 41 minutes over second-seeded Jen Kessy and April Ross of the United States.
Before the Grand Slam presented by SEAT double gold medal win for China, only men’s and women’s teams from Brazil and the United States had swept a podium at a double gender event on the SWATCH FIVB World Tour.  Chen and Xu have five FIVB gold medals to their credit with their last win being at the 2008 Moscow stop where the Chinese defeated Nicole Branagh and Elaine of the United States in the finale.
With two wins Monday, including a 21-12 and 21-16 semi-final victory in 42 minutes over 17th-seeded Casey Jennings and Brad Keenan of the United States, Wu and Xu shared the $43,500 first-place prize in winning seven-straight matches at the Grand Slam presented by SEAT, the second of six “major” events on the 2010 SWATCH FIVB World Tour.
Dalhausser and Rogers, who advanced to the finals with a 21-15 and 21-15 victory in 44 minutes over third-seeded Julius Brink and Jonas Reckermann of Germany, split $29,000 for the second-place finish.  Despite losing the finale, the Americans increased their lead on the SWATCH season point’s list as Dalhausser and Rogers have 3,140 points as compared to 2,500 points for Brink/Reckermann and 2,480 for Alison Cerutti/Emanuel Rego of Brazil.  Wu and Xu are seventh on the rankings list with 1,540 points.
In the bronze medal match, Brink and Reckermann returned to the Moscow podium for the second-straight year by defeating Jennings and Keenan 21-17 and 21-17 in 44 minutes for the $23,000 third-place prize.  Brink and Reckermann captured the 2009 Grand Slam presented by SEAT finale by defeating Emanuel and Ricardo in a three-set gold medal match.
Jennings and Keenan, who were playing in their first SWATCH FIVB World Tour semi-final, split $18,400 for fourth-place.  While Jennings was competing in his third international “final four”, Keenan was posting his best-ever SWATCH FIVB World Tour placement.  He had previously finished ninth with Jennings earlier this season in Brazil and China.
The men’s SWATCH FIVB World Tour continues Tuesday in the Czech Republic as Prague hosts its second international event.  The women taking a two-week break before returning to play with the men for the $600,000 ConocoPhillips Grand Slam in Stavanger.
